On November 28, Freida Pinto attended the Indian premiere and press conference for You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger at the International Film Festial of India. A quote from Freida during the red carpet can be read below. I have only been able to find the two pictures featured above from the events, held in Goa, India. Call it Allen’s magic or the effect of Pinto’s beauty, but the hall was packed to its full capacity for the film, which is being shown in India for the first time. “It is great to see that the film is a houseful. No matter how big or small a film is, it is always great to know that your film is being liked by people,” Pinto said before the screening.

First of all, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ally and I used to work on a fellow Freida Pinto fansite, however now I have been welcomed by Filip to join him in running Freida Pinto Fan, which was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse. I can’t thank him enough for that!

Secondly, and more importantly, I have added some gorgeous new portraits of Freida at 2010 Toronto International Film Festival from a few weeks ago. She was there to premiere and promote both Miral and You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. It’s fair to say that Freida looks effortless in both shoots, which are available to view in the gallery right now.

Freida Pinto was recently interviewed by Sky Showbiz, where she talked about avoiding stereotypes in Hollywood. Freida also chatted about her latest film project and working with Woody Allen on You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger.

You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, the latest movie from writer/director Woody Allen, finally premiered (in limited release) the past week. The movie, starring Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Gemma Jones and Lucy Punch did very well as it debuted on only six screens and earned $27, 167 on each for a weekend total of $163,000. It was released already on Wednesday, and the full gross of the movie currently stands at $215,000. A respectable number considering the six screens it plays on.

No word yet on when it opens at more cinemas, but considering the numbers and the recent reviews it shouldn’t be too long. More information about that will be posted when available.

Woody Allen’s latest, much-anticipated, project – You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger – is finally being released in US cinemas today! So far it’s only shown in select New York and Los Angeles theaters, but I’m sure that will expand soon. Freida Pinto stars as the mysterious Dia, the muse to Josh Brolin’s character Roy. The movie also stars Naomi Watts, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Gemma Jones and Lucy Punch.

Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger got mixed reviews. Although as it screened at the Toronto Film Festival this September as well, more and more positive reviews have been published. It currently holds a 45% rating on RottenTomatoes.com, though with only 31 reviews counted. If you’re located near a cinema that shows the movie; don’t hesitate to go and see it this weekend!

The movie follows a pair of married couples, Alfie and Helena, and their daughter Sally and husband Roy, as their passions, ambitions, and anxieties lead them into trouble and out of their minds. After Alfie leaves Helena to pursue his lost youth and a free-spirited call girl named Charmaine, Helena abandons rationality and surrenders her life to the loopy advice of a charlatan fortune teller.

Unhappy in her marriage, Sally develops a crush on her handsome art gallery owner boss, Greg, while Roy, a novelist nervously awaiting the response to his latest manuscript, becomes moonstruck over Dia, a mystery woman who catches his gaze through a nearby window.

So far, Woody Allen has directed four actresses to four Academy Awards. That fact wasn’t lost on Freida Pinto and Lucy Punch, who play the Woodman’s latest good girl and bad girl, respectively, in his new film, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.

Opening Wednesday, the comedic romance continues Allen’s transferring of his Gotham sensibilities to international locales. Here it’s London, as Dia (Pinto) moves into a flat across from Roy and Sally (Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts) and inadvertently entices Roy, a would-be novelist. Meanwhile, Charmaine (Punch) is a call girl married to Sally’s father (Anthony Hopkins) and living a life free from self-doubt — a trait every other character has in spades. It’s the kind of melancholy roundelay Allen perfected in classics like “Manhattan,” “Hannah” and “Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

How well-versed were you in Woody Allen films when you auditioned?
Very. Back in college I studied literature, and we had a lot of his plays as part of our curriculum. I was really aware of his work by the time I went in for the audition. I really don’t know what I did during the audition, but the fact that I got the part probably means that I did something right! But I think that what actually happens is that when you start to film, everything starts fresh. You cannot predict what will happen and what his style of directing will be like. Everyone told me that he was going to be very quiet and very elusive and that he was probably not going to talk to me. But that wasn’t the case at all.

Could you improvise at all?
That’s the amazing thing about Woody Allen. He doesn’t want you to follow the script like it’s the Bible. He wants you to be flexible and bring your own flavor to a character. And I didn’t want to make her like other characters in his films. I’ve [lived] enough that I can dig up from my own past and put that into this character. She wasn’t an easy character to play because nobody likes people who break people’s hearts. I had to try and make her as understandable
as possible but at the same time keep her a mystery.

You did make one major contribution, though, right?
Yes — my character’s name was Lolita initially, and it sounded a lot like my character’s name in “Slumdog,” Latika. So I told Woody and he tried another name and I didn’t like that one either. So I said, let’s make it short and simple, something that everyone can pronounce quite easily — like Dia. He liked it because it means “light,” and I thought that was nice even though it is quite contrary to her, since she’s so confused and in a dark place emotionally.

You’ve spent a lot of time in New York. Did you connect with that aspect of his writing and personality?
Woody does have a very typical New York sense of humor. Early on in rehearsals, he was breaking the ice with me and he said, “So, I hear you still have flying carpets and snake charmers in India.” And I looked at him and then I realized that he was kidding. I said, “Woody, I think you’ve got the wrong city. I think you’re talking about New York!” I feel that sometimes people didn’t get his humor. I think they thought it was rude. But I got it. I think it’s funny.

“Stranger” is only your second movie. Do you have more confidence after working with Woody?
This film pretty much marked the peak of my confidence. If I could work on a project with a legendary director like him, then I don’t think there’ll be any other challenges that come my way that I can’t handle!

When it comes to acting roles, Freida Pinto has yet to meet her tall, dark stranger. In Woody Allen’s wry comedy You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, the stranger means different things to different characters: handsome lover to one, possibly death to another.

Freida, at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival to promote the movie, said her metaphorical stranger is not being able to live a fantasy such as working with Allen and co-star Josh Brolin.

“I was sick to my stomach knowing I had two amazing talents – Josh Brolin, Woody Allen — working with me,” said the Indian former model, who got her big break in Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire. “I really spent my first days being nervous and being very petrified about which way I was going — Was I going to get fired? It was this immense amount of pressure and stress,” she told Reuters in an interview.

Due out in U.S. theaters on September 22, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger is the witty tale of a pair of couples whose marriages have gone askew, and reflects Allen’s ironic outlook on life and death.

Pinto plays mystery woman Dia, who becomes the muse to struggling novelist Roy, played by Brolin. Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Antonio Banderas also star. Once Pinto got over the initial jitters of joining an ensemble of acclaimed actors in her third film, she said her portrayal of Dia came very easily.

“Being the muse and being mysterious is not something I had to work on. It was something that needed to come naturally,” she said. “It’s like being thrown into the deep end. You have to learn to swim or you drown. I think I learned to swim.”

That “sink or swim” idiom fits Pinto’s rapid rise in Hollywood since making her acting debut in director Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire in 2008.

She also has a second movie – Miral – at the Toronto festival and three others due for release in 2011. In director Julian Schnabel’s Miral, Pinto plays the role of a young Palestinian girl growing up in East Jerusalem.

“Miral” gleaned a lukewarm reception from critics, a potentially hurtful experience for a new actor”, said Pinto. “I could be destroyed by it, but it gave me more strength in a way. I was blessed that I had two people who believed in me — and two amazing people Julian and Woody — straight after the Danny Boyle film. That gives you confidence. My career path has not been bad so I have nothing to complain about.”

Woody Allen has claimed that Freida Pinto was perfectly cast for her role in his upcoming film You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger. In the movie, Pinto plays a young art gallery assistant who begins an affair with a married writer (Josh Brolin).

The AP reports that Allen told journalists at the Toronto International Film Festival that the character required an actress that is just as beautiful as Naomi Watts, who plays the writer’s wife. “We wanted somebody that he looked out the window at who was an obscure object of desire. We figured, who could it be?” he said. “He’s married to Naomi Watts, who is so beautiful and such a wonderful actress.” He continued: “What could lure a guy from Naomi Watts? Nothing really.”

Allen added that a close-up of Pinto early in the film confirmed that he was right to select her for the role.  “You see that face close up over the table, and that face is pulverising. She’s so beautiful.”

You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger will debut in US cinemas on September 22.
