‘Miral’ on Blu-ray and DVD July 12th

The Weinstein Company has announced that Miral is set to be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on July 12! The beautiful box-art of Freida as Miral can be seeen to your right. Below is the synopsis, bonus features and what some critics said of the movie. Be sure to buy it as soon as it hits the shelves on July 12. I know I will!

MIRAL is the story of a Palestinian girl coming of age amidst the war zone of the Israeli-Arab conflict — unflinchingly told through the perspective of Miral (Freida Pinto) herself. Following the death of her troubled mother, Miral’s father (Alexander Siddig) is forced to entrust her to the orphanage of Hind Husseini (Hiam Abbass). Hind’s commitment to peace through education has a profound impact on the maturing young woman, and Miral’s epic journey to self-esteem and social consciousness proves both harrowing and hopeful.

The MIRAL Blu-ray™ and DVD bonus features include deleted scenes; “The Making of Miral” featurette; a Studio Tour with Julian Schnabel; a Filmmaker Q&A; and an Audio Commentary with director Julian Schnabel and producer Jon Kilik. Note: Special features are subject to change.

“Miral is a must see,” says Hamptons.com’s Brittany Buckley.  “Pinto plays the role of a lifetime that brings humanity to a grim reality.  Schnabel’s film tells a chilling, yet truthful tale that holds the power to change history.”  Screen International’s Mike Goodridge writes, “Julian Schnabel’s sincere and thought-provoking film Miral is rich in compassion and drama.”  Writes USA Today’s Claudia Puig, “Director Julian Schnabel puts his unmistakable dreamlike stamp on the film.”

‘Miral’ Finally Receives PG-13 Rating

According to Entertainment Weekly, the MPAA has overturned their R-rating of Julian Schnabel’s film, Miral. The feature, which stars Freida Pinto and follows the real-life story of a Palestinian girl coping with war while growing up in East Jerusalem, was slapped with an R-rating for “violent content, including a sexual assault.” Schnabel and producer Jon Kilik argued that younger generations should be able to see such a film about a teenager, particularly one dealing with such a serious issue. The MPAA listened by changing the rating to PG-13. “I understand the MPAA is by nature a protective organization, but I felt very strongly that they didn’t need to protect teenagers from my film,”

Schnabel said in a press release obtained by EW. “Quite the contrary, teenagers are the intended audience for Miral’s story. I am very happy the MPAA proved to be open minded and ultimately agreed.” Miral is based on Rula Jebreal’s semi-autobiographical novel, also named Miral.

The movie hits cinemas on March 25.

Doha Tribeca Film Festival – Promoting ‘Miral’, Part 3

Here’s a new interview with Freida Pinto from the ongoing Doha Tribeca Film Festival. She talks about why she did Miral and the importance of the movie. It’s a great read so be sure to read the entire article right away! I’ve featured some tidbits from it below, but I strongly recommend you to read the full piece.

A one-film wonder she isn’t. A one-woman force she is.

Just for your safety, sanity and general well-being heed this advice. If you ever have the opportunity to sit down in a room with Freida Pinto, don’t let her soft facial features and girly exterior fool you. Touch on topics including war, humanity and her future children and prepare to be hit by a one-woman force to be reckoned with. The girl has opinions and she isn’t afraid to share them.

“I was born in a free country. Free to have education,” she said, perched so precariously on the edge of a sofa I was afraid she might fall off. “Sometimes you have to look at what happened in the past and know it shouldn’t happen in the future. My grandparents and history books will tell me that through war a lot of people have lost their lives. Many of them so young.”

The intensity growing in Pinto’s eyes as she spoke, she said: “When that happens, if you have any humanity in you, you know that when a child dies you are really killing the future. I think that was enough for me to think that when I have a child I don’t want my child to be born in a world where he has to think, ‘Do I have the right to an education, to say what I want?’”
